"The tower, which was not supposed
to be there, plunges into the earth..."
to be there, plunges into the earth..."
I really enjoyed this super-short, atmospheric, sci-fi thriller. Annihilation follows four women — known only as the Anthropologist, Surveyor, Psychologist, and our narrator, the Biologist — who enter as the twelfth expedition into Area X. They pass through a translucent membrane that marks its edge and explore the tranquil, almost eden-like wilderness inside. Soon they discover at its heart, a mysterious tower. Inside it lay the secrets to Area X and the fate of the previous eleven expeditions, one of which, we learn, the Biologist's husband served on.
Creepy characters, a non-linear timeline of events, and some mythic-scale themes of men, monsters, and nature made Annihilation a disturbing, exhilarating afternoon read. I can't wait to dive into Part II and III of the trilogy — and then go see the movie adaption next February. [JG]
